The Yukon Art Center
Dec 3rd
1 pm
Join us for the opening reception on Thursday, November 30, 5-7PM at the yukon art center main gallery
Yukon Artists At Work (YAAW) has been a mainstay of the Whitehorse arts scene since it began in a tiny trailer in the MacRae subdivision of Whitehorse in 2003. A new exhibit marks the 20th anniversary of YAAW and celebrates the important role the organization has played in the territory.
The show is called Re-collecting Yukon Artists at Work – 20th Anniversary Exhibit. It features the work of more than 75 artists who are current or former members of YAAW.
“YAAW is a truly artist-driven organization,” says co-curator Nicole Bauberger. “We have never had core funding; our existence depends on artists paying their dues, working shifts to keep the gallery open, and sharing their artwork. YAAW has created a place where the work of these artists can find an audience.”
As many as possible of the works have been loaned to the exhibition by Yukon art lovers. Several are from the Yukon Permanent Art Collection. A few are still in the collections of the artists.
“We’ve tried to include in this show a piece from every artist who spent time as a member of YAAW, and the art spans the full 20 years of YAAW’s existence,” says the show’s other co-curator, Janet Patterson. “As someone who only joined Yukon Artists at Work a few years ago, I loved connecting with artists who were with the organization before my time, and seeing their work. I am very excited to share this collection with members of the public.”
“Among the works people will find a few collaborations,” says Bauberger. “YAAW itself is a collaboration between member artists, and between artists and our community at large. The quality of our organization is reflected in the ways we have worked together over the years, and the way we continue to work together.”

This collective work takes the form of a multimedia installation depicting a small village lost in the night, a wind-tossed canoe, a vast, star-studded sky, and Yukoners diving into a tale about a flying canoe from another a time long ago.
This canoe, built in the Maritimes, had spent thirty years lying abandoned in an oxbow lake on the M’Clintock River in the Yukon. As she slumbered, this sleeping boat developed a new root system. She was transformed by the environment that had become her home.
The artists saw in the canoe a curious similarity with their own existences, punctuated with departures and arrivals, intermittent frenzy and stillness, change.
The work thus considers what we carry with us in our old roots from the past: traditions, emotions, a language, a way of being… And what we become with those brand new roots that we continue to put down throughout our lives.
Maya’s art will be included in Marie Helen’s installation, as her Israeli heritage is portrayed in traditions and colour.

Come join me as I create a landscape, on a live demo, inspired by our community and YOU!
I’ll be at Yukon artists at Work on June 16-18, at 11 am to 2 pm. The painting will include the light and color of every day moments, and ideas from the community about what they find brings them lights- their experiences and idea. What we put in our focus grows and I’ll be creating a large visual focus on our light in the community, through light and colors.
The painting will be done in bright colors and large canvas, to be visible well from afar. Techniques, ideas formation, and different stages will be demonstrated live. The painting will be inspired by the community, and later given to the community in a format that helps people be seen and valued.

We’ll color in varied techniques and enjoy the step by step guided workshop to start the semester on a colorful side!
Material List: pencils, erasers, paper (A4 approx. size), a cup, a plate, colors – what you have works! (colored pencils, watercolors paint, pastels, markers - any of them is great)

___________________________________________________________________________
The all-time fun mandalas workshop and the landscapes from recycled materials! And the best part! they work well together (skills at one will help at the other!) or apart (they're flexible in content and step by step guided).
This past months have shown me that flexibility is KEY and so I've got workshops for you that are flexible with packages (one or two), in content - use whatever you have at home!, in place
(take your PC to the backyard and paint in the sun!) and in time (afternoons for family friendly timing). It's the ones that even if you've done them before, that's great, because every tome you get a different result and even better to make it more then once. The more I do mandalas the better I get!
So grab a smile and join me! :)
As many parents asked, I'm opening a small group of painting classes for ages 9-12, at a special price of more then half the regular price off!!!!
What you'll get:
- an opportunity for a painting class at home at a reduced price for the pilot program for our special times
- small groups of max. 15 kids to learn the basics of paintings and color theory at home, with an interactive zoom class and direct feedback on real time.
- a program with continuity from one class to another, as well as practice and follow ups on skills and themes, to gain momentum and a flow in the lessons (to increase our practice and skills levels).
- share art with friends and have a social creative afternoon
- get my art 101 kit:
- Color theory basics
- Landscape paintings by complementary colors inspired
by local scenes
- Painting techniques: Blending, wet and dry techniques,
perspective, Painting with value and hue to create depth
- much more! as every kid has their own ideas, creativity and interests, we'll start from the basics and grow into our own style and ways to express ourselves with colors- a little secrete - that's the BEST part of my job- to see their art and their own progress and ideas come through!!!
It's my hope that by doing this at home, you'll learn how to be independent with art as times goes and you'll have one more art tool to use at these challenging times, to occupy, express, enjoy, release, and create something new (that brings more color to our life!)
Program starts May 4th! Hit me up for registration info at “contact me” at the website!

Hi everyone!
I’m so excited to share with you a very special paint party for the holidays!
So I was thinking, how can I combine my love to art, our community, our nature, and animals, all in one event? There's just so much I want to do... but luckily creativity comes with the artist title sometimes and I'm surrounded by the most amazing inspiring people!
So as a part of art making our lives better, and my business being community focused - I've decided to donate 40% of my profit in the next paint party to the Humane Society animals shelter. Weather we recycle, reduce use, donate something, or make ourselves feel better with art- every little step goes a long way to make ourselves and our community better and more colorful! Art is a great way to give back to yourself and others :)
We'll paint a winter wonderland scene (see picture in event page on facebook at www.facebook.com/mayaart2), get creative, make your own painting to take home step by step, enjoy a fun evening with friends, and let go before the holidays craziness!
Mark your calendars! we'll have our event at December 15, 6-9 pm, at Baked Cafe!
Price includes one FREE drink and ALL art supply! just bring yourself and enjoy! each ticket is $65.

Registration available at Friday eve of the festival.
Details through Atlin festival at https://www.atlinfestival.ca/about/
Excited to have a few pieces on this show! When my friend said I should be on this show because it's on water and basically all my paintings have water in them (or snow... other water forms...) I thought - sure! makes total sense :) but how to make it special? how to make it a first, even though I've exhibited so many water paintings before?
This is how: this time I'll share a bigger piece of me. I'll share the intentions and inspirations behind each painting in Hebrew as well as its English translation. Because my first language, my initial inspiration, that feeling you have when just picking up the brush and the canvas is still white and all the options are open (aka true freedom... and the best feeling in the world) are all a part of my art. and will be shared at this exhibition in colors and language. So come and visit the show this month at Arts Underground , and enjoy mine and many more talented artists' arts (it's a great YAS members show!) Hope you enjoy it :)
I’m excited and honored to be Adaka’s kids programmer this year! We have so many kids activities, daily from 12-4. and the best part- it’s FREE!!!
Come at June 29- July 4!
*adults must accompany kids.
Join a fun and creative art camp to learn new art skills and make varied art, inspired and made from nature. During the art and Nature camp youth will be creating and experiencing with multimedia visual art pieces, while exploring nature's inspiring colors, shapes and textures. What better way to learn about colors than with the colors all around us- especially in the Yukon summer! We'll be combining art materials with natural materials, as kids will learn and practice the basics of acrylics and color theory, painting their own landscapes, and varied additional visual arts and crafts. Kids will learn how to develop creative thinking in color, have the tools to make their own art, and leave with varied art pieces to take home
Registration and details through Arts Underground at 667- 4080 or programs@artsunderground.ca
Art by Maya will be at Artist in the Park! Wehooo!!!
Come meet me at 12-1 pm on the week of June 3 to 8, at the arts in the park space! We’ll visualize how art helps our community! Here is the project we’ll work on, but in short- you’ll paint and it goes to support Whitehorse! :)
. The project will focus on the idea of spaces in between through music and art, from the perspectives of our community members. The spaces in between can be when we breathe deeply, when we enjoy a good song, when we paint longer than planned. It’s an important reminder that sometimes a lunch break for music is a great and valued time, that is just as important as the meetings afterwards if not even more, the deep breath we take in between the busy moments. I will facilitate an art project that will focus on a visual representation of the feeling of spaces in between with the use of lines and hues, negative space and contrast, facilitated by me and painted collaboratively by the community members. It will be donated to a community organization. This way the project is made by the community for the community, and will hopefully serve the goal of inspiring people to remember the value of art forms and the space it brings to our lives.
Art gives a space in between, a different perspective that gives a deep breath and makes everything seem possible. I'd like you to see it through your own eyes and heart, which is why every person in the audience could contribute to the creation of an art piece that represents the space music and colors created for them. It doesn't matter where you're coming from. It doesn't matter which language you speak. It doesn't matter what age you are. You can always become more and more you if you remember to enjoy the spaces in between. This project represents the empowering and inspiring results of collaborative forms of arts in our community
hope to see you thee! :)
I'm SO excited to invite you to Art by Maya's students year end show at the Community Gallery at the Yukon Art Center!
I am SO SO SO proud of my students, their skills development, growth, sharing their unique and creative ideas, colorful paintings, wonderful drawings, amazing prints, and am really happy I get to be their teacher and a part of their art journey. I can encourage them, teach techniques and support them in developing skills, but ultimately it's their art and it's their own creativity and hard work you'll see at our show- and it's WONDERFUL! Can't wait to show you what we've been working on!

Art is meant to empower our community, so why not with colors?
We're excited to invite you to join us in celebrating the mural painting at the Itsy Bitsy Yarn Store. It was inspired to create, by the amazing store that owns it, a yarn wonderland where yarn grows on trees and rivers are knitted where you want them to pop up. I mean, isn’t this how the Yukon River came to be? Someone knitted it over a long winter? ;) Haha… but seriously, this mural is a colorful appreciation to the amazing people that run it and the great COMMUNITY and creativity it supports.
We are THRILLED to invite you to join us at May 3, Friday, at 5-6 pm, at Itsy Bitsy Yarn Store, to celebrate, enjoy appies, AMAZING DOOR PRIZES, and lots and lots of love and creativity :)
Looking forward to see you!
